Layers do not rule out a braid, they just mean the braid needs to be built around them rather than pulled through them, and that is exactly what hair extensions braids are designed to do.
Why layered hair makes a braid harder
Not every strand in layered hair reaches the same length, so a braid can end up looking uneven as shorter pieces fall out before they reach the plait. That does not mean layered hair cannot be braided well. It means we need to think about the shortest layer, the overall density, how much length you actually want, and where the extra hair should sit before we touch a single strand.
Where the extension does the work
Extra hair can provide both length and volume, and at Tatiana Karelina our tape system in particular can be used for either or both depending on what your layers need. The aim is never to attach as much hair as possible and braid it all together. It is to give the braid something substantial to hold onto while your natural layers blend into it rather than fight it.
Start with the right colour match
If your hair is heavily layered, the extension has to disappear into the colour and texture you already have. We blend multiple tones of genuine Russian hair by hand rather than dyeing to one flat shade, which matters even more when your natural hair has several tones running through it from previous colouring or simply sun exposure.
Prepare before you braid, not during
We check how the layers naturally fall before creating tension anywhere. Forcing every short section into the braid creates strain for no real benefit. A steadier approach lets the extension carry the length while your own layers settle into the shape around it.
Build the volume the braid actually needs
Fine ends under heavy layering often mean a thin-looking braid. Our tapes sit flat against the scalp and are mapped to the shape of the head, so the weight distributes evenly rather than bunching in one spot. Once that foundation is right, there is simply more hair to work with when the braid itself is built.

Keep the join invisible
The single biggest mistake is an obvious line where natural hair stops and extension hair starts. Placement, colour and blending all have to work together, and the principle stays the same across techniques: the extension should move with your hair, not against it.
Choosing the braid itself
A fuller braid gives layered hair more room to blend than a tight, thin one. Before booking, think about whether you want something soft and relaxed or sleek and polished, since the amount of extension hair used depends entirely on that answer, not on a fixed formula.
What if your layers are very short?
Very short layers are not always meant to disappear completely. Sometimes letting them frame the face makes the whole style look more intentional, rather than treating every strand as a problem to be hidden inside the braid.
When to book a consultation
If you have heavily layered hair and want a fuller braided style, professional advice can save you from choosing an unsuitable application. We can look at your layers, your desired length and the most appropriate hair extensions braids option before anything is attached.
Ready to book?
If your layers have been putting you off braided styles, a consultation is the quickest way to find out what is actually possible.
You can book a consultation at either salon, in Kensington, London or Piccadilly, Manchester, and we will assess your hair before recommending anything.
Call us on +44 (0)203 645 1761, message us on WhatsApp at +44 (0)771 439 2999, or book online. We are usually able to offer a same-day consultation and fitting given our in-salon stock.
Frequently asked questions
1. Can extensions really fix an uneven layered braid?
Yes. Adding length and volume through hair extensions braids gives the plait more material to work with, so shorter layers have less chance of pulling loose.
2. Will people be able to tell where my hair ends and the extension starts?
Not if the colour is matched properly and the placement is planned around your layers. That is exactly what a consultation is for before any braid is attempted.
