What is a Clip-in Hair Topper?
Clip-in hair toppers or wiglet are names for what is essentially a partial wig. While a wig provides coverage for the entire head, a clip-in topper allows you to uniquely address the areas that are affected from thinning hair or partial hair loss. Hair toppers are made from monofilament, lace or a silk base. The hair toppers can have bases in different sizes and come in different lengths and thicknesses. uniquely address your partial hair loss needs. When choosing a hair topper or wiglet, you will want to note the base style and size, the hair length, hair type and colour. This will help determine which topper style is right for you.
Our Clip-In Toppers
Most pre-made hair toppers are made of processed silicone coated hair which does not look natural. Our clip-in toppers are custom-made from Russian hair. We hand-blend different shades of hair, just as we do with our clip-in extensions, allowing us to replicate highlights, lowlights, roots, and balayage effects. A custom-made topper will take between 2-3 weeks to make but will last years.
How to Select a Topper
One thing to keep in mind when shopping for a wiglet is that there is no one size fits all solution. Each hairpiece is meticulously designed to offer coverage where you need it and to blend in with your existing hair. While we generally recommend a free in-person consultation where we will assist in determining the right topper for you here is some basic information which will assist in determining if a hair topper is the right solution for you.
STEP 1: DETERMINE YOUR TYPE OF HAIR LOSS
There are 3 stages hair loss:
In the beginning stage hair loss begins in a diffused pattern at the top of the head resulting in minimal loss. Most women with this stage of hair loss will need a topper with a smaller base size. The progressive stage of hair loss where the scalp becomes noticeable through sparse areas of hair and as such a medium to large base is typically needed. In the advanced stage hair loss at this stage is typically very noticeable and completely bald areas of scalp are visible. While the largest of base sizes will work to completely conceal hair loss some women may want to consider a full wig.
STEP 2: CHOOSE A BASE TYPE
There are 2 main types of bases:
With the monofilament base, the base is formed by attaching each individual hair to a soft mesh material. Because each hair is hand tied to the base, it gives the appearance of real hair growing from the scalp. The classic base features rows or wefts of hair where the natural hair can be pulled in between the wefts to integrate your own hair with the hairpiece. The decision on which base is best will generally be determine by the stage of hair loss and the location. For example, if your hair is thinning mainly at the part, you may need a monofilament base that is long and skinny. But if your hair is thinning at the crown, you may need a wider base and as such the classic base would be more suitable.
STEP 3: SELECT HAIR TYPE, COLOUR AND LENGTH
Just as we do with our line of made-to-measure clip-in extensions, clients can choose between European and Russian hair, in any lengths between 10” to 32” and have a perfect colour match perfect. To see our strand-by-strand colour blending technique click here
