What Are Hair Toppers?
Hair toppers are a great and easy option for women to disguise partial hair loss or thinning areas on the scalp. This type of hair loss can occur as a result of aging, alopecia, medical treatment, stress and trichotillomania, amongst other conditions.
Hair toppers are made from a monofilament, lace or silk base. The toppers have bases in different sizes and come in different lengths and thicknesses, uniquely addressed to your partial hair loss needs. When choosing a hair topper, you will want to note the base style, size, hair length, hair type and colour. This will determine which topper style is right for you.
Unlike most hair toppers which are made of processed silicone coated hair, our clip-in toppers are custom-made from Russian hair to ensure they look 100% natural. Just as we do with our clip-in extensions we hand-blend different shades of hair, allowing us to replicate highlights, lowlights, roots, and balayage effects. A custom-made topper can take between 2-3 weeks to make, but it will last years.
How to Select A Topper
One thing to keep in mind when shopping for a topper is there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’. Each hairpiece is meticulously designed to offer coverage where you need it. Also to blend in perfectly with your natural hair.
We generally recommend a free in-person consultation however, here is some basic information which will help you determine if a hair topper is the right solution for you.
Step 2: Choose base type
There are 2 main types of bases, monofilament and classic. With the monofilament base, the base is formed by attaching each individual hair to a soft mesh material. Because each hair is hand tied to the base, it gives the appearance of real hair growing from the scalp. The classic base features rows or wefts of hair where the natural hair can be pulled in between the wefts to integrate your own hair with the hairpiece. The decision on which base is best will generally be determine by the stage of hair loss and the location. For example, if your hair is thinning mainly at the part, you may need a monofilament base that is long and skinny. But if your hair is thinning at the crown, you may need a wider base and as such the classic base would be more suitable.
Step 1: Establish type of hair loss
There are 3 stages hair loss: beginning, progressive and advanced. In the beginning stage hair loss begins in a diffused pattern at the top of the head resulting in minimal loss. Most women with this stage of hair loss will need a topper with a smaller base size. The progressive stage of hair loss where the scalp becomes noticeable through sparse areas of hair and as such a medium to large base is typically needed. In the advanced stage hair loss at this stage is typically very noticeable and completely bald areas of scalp are visible. While the largest of base sizes will work to completely conceal hair loss some women may want to consider a full wig.
Step 3: Select hair type, colour and length
Just as we do with our line of made-to-measure clip-in extensions, clients can choose between European and Russian hair, in any lengths between 10” to 32” and have a perfect colour match perfect. To see our strand-by-strand colour blending technique click here
